Frio Mexican Treats

Frio Mexican Treats

If you’ve ever wanted to enjoy ice cream that serves a greater purpose, Frio is the answer. Were you hoping the title of this blog meant calorie-free ice cream? Not quite. We’ll get to the treats in a moment but first, you should know about Frio for Better Days.

(From their website) FRIO for better days was created a year ago in order to support the most vulnerable groups both in Mexico and in the United States, we have no profit purpose and everything we give although it is not much is from the heart. We give meals, we celebrate children with low income, we distribute food and basic daily food needs , we do not look for donations but if someone wants to help even 1 dollar or go to Mexico to do community service with us, we will  thank you from the bottom of our  heart.

Frio had been on our list of places to try for awhile. The concept of a Mexican ice cream shop was very intriguing but we had never heard anyone mention it before. On the first hot day of the year, we ventured to give it a try. The vibe of Frio feels just like you walked into a food truck. While there is seating, we wouldn’t say it’s very welcoming. It’s the type of place where you grab your treat and head to a park, go on a walk, drive down to the river, etc.

On first impression, your shoes will stick to the floor which matches the ice cream shop aesthetic. It didn’t concern us, but it feels like they ripped out carpet and chose not to replace it with something else. It adds to the charm.

The whole menu looked amazing and while we wanted to try a bit of everything, we only got two items for our first visit, both from the churro bar: Cojidonas cafe-con-donas and Mexican S’mores (written mexican Smors on their website). When you go, bring friends so you can try out more of the menu.

The Mexican S’mores contains vanilla ice cream smothered in chocolate fudge mazapan (crushed peanut Mexican candy), two vanilla cream-filled churros covered in cajeta & mazapan topped with whipped cream and roasted marshmallows. This will make any S’mores lover happy. The peanut candy makes it taste a bit more like S’mores with peanut butter, definitely not a bad thing. There’s nothing bad about this treat, but if we had to make any notes it would be this: Because the hot fudge and churros are both hot, it makes the ice cream melt very quickly. Also, there was so much hot fudge at the bottom that you almost can’t even eat the whole thing. It’s just straight hot fudge at that point, which we chose not to eat by the spoonful.

The Cojidonas cafe-con-donas is the Mexican version of coffee & donuts but with a Mexican pastry, Bailey’s ice cream, hot fudge, and churros. This is a great pick for anyone who loves coffee flavored ice cream. Our notes are pretty much the same. Delicious. Hot items makes ice cream melt fast. Tons of hot fudge.

We will most definitely be returning, likely multiple times, this summer. In addition to their ice cream treats Frio also offers a few other Mexican favorites such as street corn, Mexican soda, speciality coffee, horchata, mangonedas, and other savory snacks.
